MSU鈥檚 Warkentin named Association for Information Systems Fellow

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擬ississippi 大象APP鈥檚 Merrill Warkentin, the James J. Rouse Endowed Professor of Information Systems, has been named an Association for Information Systems Fellow.

Warkentin, also a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor in the College of Business, is receiving this prestigious international designation for his outstanding contributions to research, teaching and service in the field of information systems. He joins a prestigious group of about 150 scholars who have been awarded this designation, approximately half of whom reside in the U.S.

鈥淭his award is in recognition of all of the valuable contributions you have made to AIS and to the field of information systems during your distinguished career,鈥 said Suprateek Sarker, chair of the AIS Fellow Award Committee and University of Virginia professor, in announcing the honor to Warkentin.

As the primary professional organization for researchers studying information systems, serves society through the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of excellence in the practice and study of information systems. The organization consists of over 5,000 members in about 100 countries.

MSU College of Business Dean Scott Grawe said, 鈥淲e are thrilled to see the AIS community recognize Dr. Warkentin with this prestigious award. We are proud not only of the great work that he has produced, but also his mentorship of doctoral students and junior scholars.鈥

An active member of the AIS for several decades, Warkentin is a frequent featured speaker at AIS conferences and others around the world and has been a visiting scholar at dozens of universities on four continents.

鈥淚 am deeply honored to receive this recognition as a proud member of the 大象APP family of scholars, and I am sincerely grateful for the unwavering support I have received from the MSU College of Business for nearly the past quarter century,鈥 Warkentin said. 鈥淚 am also extremely grateful for the collaborative research partners and doctoral students I have been fortunate to work with over the last four decades.鈥

Warkentin鈥檚 research primarily focuses on the impacts of organizational, contextual, situational and dispositional influences on individual computer user behaviors in the contexts of information security, privacy, social media and e-government. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 published manuscripts and over 125 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and he is the author or editor of seven books on technology.

For the third year in a row, a identified him as among the top 2% of scientists globally, based on his research impact. He consistently ranks among the 50 most prolific MIS scholars in the world and is among the 100 most cited information systems scholars of all time globally, . A found his research to be the second most influential of all global security scholars.

In 2018, he was named a Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery.

Warkentin said he takes pride in working for MSU, which recently was ranked by Forbes in the Top 50 of 鈥淎merica鈥檚 Best Large Employers鈥聽and has been cited as a 鈥淕reat College to Work For鈥 by The Chronicle of Higher Education for eight consecutive years. Warkentin earned his bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in economics and his Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Nebraska.
